It smells like champagne, sauerkraut, good wine, beer… We’re boarding!
The Grand Est is a large region (but there is more!) which includes the Ardennes, Aube, Marne, Haute-Marne, Moselle, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Vosges, Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin. The capital of this beautiful region is Strasbourg.
Strasbourg
We’re a few miles from Germany. Strasbourg is a beautiful city. The Grande Ile is its old centre surrounded by the river III and the canal du Faux-Rempart.
The Alsace Wine Route
You will be able to criss-cross the 170 km of roads that border the Alsatian vineyards. Be careful, consume only in moderation. Don’t hesitate to make a few stops in some pretty villages such as Obernai, Guebwiller or Riquewihr…
Near Obernai, you can also visit Mont Saint-Odile.
Colmar
It is one of the most beautiful cities in Alsace and has an impressive architectural and cultural heritage. Here also you will find these famous half-timbered houses dating from the Renaissance. You will be able to admire the small Alsatian Venice.
Nancy
There are 3 places that you must not miss under any circumstances! Stanislas Square is the most famous square in the city, where you can discover rococo pavilions and fountains.
Between the triumphal arch and the government palace is the Place de la Carrière.
And the last and undoubtedly the quietest is the Piazza dell’Alliance, where there is a fountain inspired by Rome’s Piazza Navona.
Metz
The city offers you the richness of its historical centre. Visit the Saint-Etienne cathedral but also the Place Saint -Jacques and its arcades.
Verdun
You can’t come to the Grand Est without going through the battlefields of the First World War. Discover there among others the fort of Douaumont, the fort of Vaux and the destroyed village of Fleury.
Finally go to the underground citadel built in 1624 by Vauban.
Reims
Welcome to the land of champagne. Let’s pop the cork! But first I suggest you go see one of the most beautiful cathedrals in France.
Don’t hesitate to inquire about the various tourist office sites. The region abounds in treasures. I’ll see you next week at the other end of France, Brittany or the arm of France.
